Enter ABI White and immediately Caddy’s were going backwards. The eventual score was 2-1 setting up an interesting final. Second round saw a close victory with VYPC beating No 1 Law by just a single goal, Land Rover however demolished Mercian by 7 goals to 4 which gave them the trophy on goal difference. The wooden spoon was taken by the Hobgoblins who suffered the biggest defeat of the night with a 10 -2 drubbing by ABI. Many thanks to our sponsors Lay-Soft for their beautiful crystal trophy. In the first round match Sporting Mentors comfortably defeated inform Hobgoblins and ABI took no prisoners in seeing off NEC. Steve Radford was murderous following an early night at the Angel Inn and took on Sporting Mentors in the final like a man possessed. A comfortable victory in the final gave ABI 4 points leaving Sporting Mentors battered by the onslaught. The wooden spoon saw NEC defeat Hobgoblins to claim 2 points and despite taking the silverware on Wednesday the Hobgoblins went back to their caves empty handed. Many thanks to Gary for organising the match however having spent the night in Leeds forgot to collect the winning prizes so we will save them for a rainy day.

Despite heavy rain the polo ground was perfect and a very competitive match was on the cards. Land Rover received half a goal in handicap and scored two quick goals to establish an early lead. Our 3 guest players linked up well together for Land Rover and it took No 1 Law a couple of chukkas to peg them down. The 5th chukka saw the score at 3 ½ - 3 with continuous pressure by No 1 Law looking for the winning goal. This pressure resulted in a penalty in the dying seconds, however Lisa Piddington failed to convert for No 1 Law. Many thanks to everybody who took part in particular Sally Donaldson for her generosity as always.

A 5 chukka thriller in the pouring rain tested everyone’s determination right to the very end. Despite No 1 Laws early lead Sporting Mentors fought back for a draw at full time. This called for sudden death penalties between the players in the last chukka and who would have predicted Andy Gaddas to miss the first. Despite trading goals and misses it all came down to the last ball which Paul converted for the win. 2 points to No 1 Law, 1 point for Sporting Mentors. Many thanks to Victoria Fletcher for organising such a worth while match we very much look forward to doing this again next year.

The weather has finally broken and the much needed rain came at last. Unlike most other polo clubs our surface was unaffected by the weather and an excellent 6 chukka match was had. A fast and exciting match saw goals traded end to end and with the scores at 5 all at the end of the 5th chukka nerve endings began to tingle amongst the teams. The experience of Tompkins held firm as RNF capitulated under the pressure resulting in a final chukka rout and an 8-5 result to Tompkins. Another good day in the office saw Tompkins claim 2 points and RNF 1 point. Many thanks to the Hunt supporters for all their help.

A large crowd of Conservatives, a beautiful afternoon weather wise, an over-flowing champagne and buffet tent with 6 chukkas of polo to enjoy! What a fantastic afternoon!
From the first throw-in this was always going to be a fast and furious match. Land Rover secured two quick goals to settle their nerve however, Debbie Stabler and Steve Radford had a number of quick attacks at goal that missed by inches. By half time the scores were 4 all with Gary Robinson scoring two break-away goals from the line out. The crowd was clearly in for a great game and despite Radland taking a 5 – 4 lead into the last chukka Land Rover fought back to firstly equalise and then force a safety 60 which Paul converted for the winning goal. Final Score 6-5 to Land Rover and 2 championship points.
After the match the members enjoyed the Conservatives hospitality until the champagne ran dry.

4 teams competed over 2 days for the Yorkshire Game Fair Cup, as usual a very large crowd very much enjoyed the drama and spectacle of the polo demonstration. On day 1, Tompkins took on Robinson’s and although it was a very close match just won by Robinson’s, the main excitement came from the mud book as firstly Sophie departed from Bloo and then Paul Piddington (the Umpire/Commentator) departed from Vinny! An interesting blend of rodeo/polo!

Day 2 was a much more sober affair with lots of goals and no carnage. Land Rover just beat the Crown Hotel by 5 goals to 4 with special mention to Hobgoblin who sneaked the winning goal in extra time. 2 points a piece to Land Rover and Robinson’s, 1 point to Tompkins and The Crown.

The first round pitched JCT against Essence and on paper the Andy Gaddas and Richard Newbert partnership should have proven to be the worthy favourites. However, JCT relentlessly attacked and proved comfortable winners by 3 goals to 0. Still shell shocked from their first round defeat Essence next drew Tompkins who introduced debutante Cash Merrell in his first match and with Adam Vincent playing out of his skin on Pampa, Essence won a comfortable 2 – 1 victory for a place in the final.
The final proved to be a well fought contest with every attack neutralised by defence, however, Ryan managed to slip the pack and slot the winning goal on Vinny. Paradoxically Vinny is owned by the Captain of Tompkins, Sally Donaldson so it would have been a bitter sweet goal for her. Photograph shows Jenny Haycox from the winning JCT team playing Paul’s Julie.
3 Points go to JCT 600, 2 points to Tompkins UK and 1 point to Essence. The next match will be on Wednesday 26th May and will be the second Crown Hotel Wednesday Night Challenge.

Glorious weather and perfect ground conditions allowed for fast open polo and in this American tournament Land Rover played Wrights in the first round. Despite Land Rover going into a 2 nil lead Wrights fought back for a final score of 2 goals a piece. Wrights next played No 1 Law and needing a greater goal difference if they were to win the cup set about the task of over whelming the No 1 Law team. A strong start but weak finish resulted in a 4 – 0 victory to Wrights. The final match saw Land Rover take on No 1 Law needing more than 4 goals to win the cup and after a slow start they produced an excellent finish to win by 6 goals and take the silverware plus 3 championship points. The last match of the arena season proved so popular that we could barely transport all the horses to the arena! The 7 teams were divided into groups with VYPC Yellow comfortably beating ABI Blue, however, Tompkins and Wrights had a ding dong battle with a 5 all draw with special mention of Sophie Tompkins who despite rarely playing this winter put in a storming performance. In the 3 team round robin Land Rover comfortably beat the Hobgoblins and VYPC Red. The finals saw a close match between Land Rover and VYPC Yellow which turned into an easy victory despite Penny putting in an admirable first match performance. Third place went to VYPC Red after a 5-4 victory against ABI Blue and then the final round of matches resulted in Tompkins running in 5th, Wrights 6th and Hobgoblins 7th. Many thanks go to Sally Donaldson and Andy Gaddas for providing excellent food back in the club house for our final arena supper. 6 Teams went into the draw for the 1st Lay-Soft competition. The first round matches were crucial as the teams with the best goal differences progressed to the final. Victories for Hobgobin and NEC got them into the final, however 2 strong teams were drawn against each other with VYPC and Ransford Electrical having an excellent battle the match proved too tough to provide a finalist and they ended up playing each other for 3rd and 4th place. The wooden spoon was fought out between ABI and Wrights with a comfortable 6-3 win to Wrights and the final was an NEC massacre of the Hobgoblins. NEC had Beverley based Gary Robinson team up with Hannah Longmore both having an excellent evening of fun and claiming a valuable 6 points and the crystal tophy. 5 points to Hobgoblins, 4 points to Ransford Electrical, 3 points to VYPC, 2 points to Wrights and 1 point to ABI.

Perfect beach conditions on a warm start of spring day produced excellent polo for the last beach match of the season. Having experienced the worst winter for over 30 years it was testament to the hardy members who had battled the elements throughout. Today’s match welcomed Gary Robinson from Beverley and Thailand however his presence on the Blue team whilst always exciting didn’t stop the Oranges capitalising on every defensive error to run out 4-2 victors and claim the points. It was an excellent introduction to Penny and Jenny who had never previously played on the beach and to start with a win is always a bonus.

An amazing rising tide some 2 hours earlier than predicted was attributed to the Chilean earthquake!! This did not stop VYPC Blue from answering every question posed by VYPC Orange and despite moments of madness by Ryan and Todd going beach walk-about Adam Vincent was always on the money and on the ball. The highest scoring match of the season so far saw 9 goals traded in a super competitive match with the Blues sneaking the winner in the dying seconds. The final ABI Beach Match of the season will be on 14th March at 2 pm.

Perfect weather and beach conditions provided the ideal environment fast, open polo and the teams did not disappoint. From the 1st throw-in the thrusting Blues made their intentions clear from the start, unfortunately their finishing did not match their attacking ability allowing Yellows to clear their goal line and counter attack. Despite Yellows winning comfortably by 4 goals to 2 the goal of the day has to go to Adam Vincent with a nearside back hand that flew past Paul Piddington’s usually solid defence. Yellows collect 2 points, Blues collect 1 point.

Despite the continued snow and freezing conditions Cleethorpes beach was at its very best. The good surface conditions allowed for fast polo and long ball hitting which Ryan Mooney fully capitalised on. VYPC Yellow welcomed Antonia Dowie to the beach for the first time and she could not have picked a hotter match to open her account with. Half time saw Reds 2-0 up and the second half didn’t get any better for the Yellows. Despite prolonged attacks Antonia and Lisa could not break through Reds defence with Leon saving a certain goal by the goal posts. The final goal saw a massive hit from Ryan go nearly to the goal mouth which Richard Hobgoblin galloped down on Delores and slotted majestically through the posts. The final score of 5-2 gave the Reds 2 points and left the Yellows with 1 point.

In amazing snow the teams prepared to do battle. The Snowmen were obviously at a huge advantage camouflaging well into the background with Adam proving particularly stealthy! Santas worked hard to keep in the match and another incredibly exciting match saw goals traded for a 2-2 draw. Yet another penalty shoot out this time favoured the Santas as the Snowmen proved wanting in the snowball fight department! It was an excellent debut for Leon who played his stockings off in front of a very supportive family entourage. Santas collect 2 points, Snowmen 1 point.

A competitive match allowed beach virgin Rupert Watkins to have a baptism of fire. End to end polo in perfect weather could not separate the teams and with the scores level at full time penalties were again set to test the players nerves. Unfortunately for the red team Richard and Rupert failed to hit the target which is a bit worrying as Rupert is an artillery officer! The more experienced Blues hit the target and claimed the championship points.

Ball control was very difficult however VYPC Orange with debutant Julie made the best of the conditions and allowed for a comfortable 3-1 victory again a strong VYPC Blue. Adam and Hobgoblin go from strength to strength and Orange claim the 2 points and the Blues 1 point. The next beach match is on Sunday 6th December at 2pm.

With absolutely filthy weather outside the match was played indoors away from the wind and rain. A high scoring game saw the Hobgoblins enter the last chukka 2 goals clear, however, the Witches were having non of it and drew level at 15 goals a piece, despite Adam Hobgoblin having an open shot at goal with 10 seconds remaining. The penalty shoot out that followed saw both teams complete 1 round of goals, however once the ball was taken further away Andy Gaddas unexpectedly missed to the left!!! Allowing Lisa to finish off the match 5-4 on penalties. 2 points to the Witches, 1 point to the Hobgoblins.

It was a pleasure to welcome Julie Wright to VYPC in her first competitive club match ever. Both Umpires Paul Piddington and Steve Radford needed a stiff drink before commencing their umpiring against 2 all ladies teams who were ready to do battle. Whatever happened we figured that the No 1 Law team with solicitor Sally Donaldson as the patron were guaranteed to win regardless of the score on a technicality. As it turned out the match was all square at half time and well organised possession and team work had kept the game flowing. No 1 Law ran out 5-2 winners to claim 2 points and wrap up what has been VYPC’s best ever season.

A comfortable win in the end led to NEC taking all the points. We very much look forward to playing the fixture again next season.

Legend Parker was having a particularly difficult day with the umpires and as a consequence gave away several soft goals, the last of which was a killer blow as it give Radlands the lead with just seconds left on the clock. Congratulations to Radland who put in a good performance to secure victory in a very tight contest. 2 Championship points rewarded to the White players with the Blacks picking up 1 point.

A good crowd came along to enjoy what proved to be an exciting end to end polo match. Visiting players all agreed that the old diary turf was not in the least bit affected by the prolonged dry spell and played amazingly. Radlands, giving away 1 ½ goals on handicap used the first chukka to organise themselves and then started finding their range. By the end of the third chukka Radlands had a comfortable 3 goal lead at 5-2 ½ but Essence were never going to give up. Having survived a nasty fall Paul sat back to consolidate Radlands lead but Dave Black and Roaul continued to attack and following an amazing goal from Roaul cut from the back line looked like they could possibly win!

The final result was a fair reflection on a good game and had Essence scored in the dying seconds it would have been well deserved. Many thanks to all the players involved.

Two very competitive teams could not be separated over 5 chukkas and at 4-4 penalties where required to find a winner. This is were a cool nerve and straight ball hitting is required and Will Wilkinson (pictured) stepped up to the plate to not only score his penalty but give victory and 2 championship points to the Yellows.

Players from Leadenham, Chester and Toulston were invited to VYPC to play in the popular San Pan Suzy Vase. Three strong teams faced each other in an American style tournament which pitted Black against Blue for the first 2 chukkas. Despite the good fast open play of Toulston’s team, VYPC based JCT 600 proved the more accurate with Will Wilkinson helping to achieve a 4-2 victory.

ABI Whites took on Toulston for the following 2 chukkas and despite a much tighter game ran out winners to face Black in the final.

The final proved to be a very close contest, ABI Whites captain Raoul Dowding was thoroughly enjoying his afternoon on two of Paul and Lisa’s best ponies Zambuka and Sabana and teamed up well with James and Corporal Jones. Blacks led throughout the match but a last ditched campaign by Whites and poor defending by Blacks saw the White patron Richard Jones slot the winning goal with just seconds to spare to run out worthy winners.

Whites take 3 points, Blacks 2 and Blues 1 for the Championship League table.

It was a pleasure to welcome players from Beverley and Toulston Polo Clubs to the new VYPC ground and with playing conditions perfect we were in for a good game. An excellent crowd turned up to watch and with Paul and Andy officiating it was game on.

The pace was fast from the first throw in and a clean open game saw the ball race from end to end. Pinks opened the scoring but by half time all was square. In the last chukkas it was apparent that Lucia’s pony power was relentless and teaming up well with Karen punished the Pinks with consistent fast attacks. Excellent defence by Pinks kept the game very tight but Whites managed to sneak the winning goal and ran out worthy winners.

ABI White started with a 2 goal advantage however, this did not stop JCT 600 storming the 1st chukka. Lisa Piddington in her first competitive match after giving birth to Oscar 2 weeks ago linked up brilliantly with Paul to score 3 quick goals to end 3-2 up at the end of the first chukka. White were having one of those days when it seemed impossible not to score, they made the impossible possible. Blacks capitalised on Whites lack of penetration with half time seeing the lead extend to 6-3.
Will Wilkinson decided to take things in hand and in the last chukka scored firstly with a nearside backhand and then a solo effort from the half way line but it was too little too late and the final score ended 6-5 to Black. Final analysis would have to conclude that Whites lost this match rather than Blacks won it but we must always remember in polo that if you don’t score you don’t win!
Blacks take 2 championship points, Whites 1 point.

In beautiful spring like conditions with a big open beach this last trip to Fraisthorpe for VYPC proved to be an exciting encounter. Both teams were very evenly matched with either Gary or Kate needing to win to claim the campionship.

First blood went to Kate with a super solo run to goal leaving the half time score 1 - 1/2. Gary had his chances to go ahead, however, Pabella's speed got the better of him and a series of miss hits allowed Whites to keep the lead.

The final score saw Whites win 2 - 1 1/2 and a well deserved Championship Victory to Kate Parks.

Next season we look forward to playing at Cleethorpes Beach in Lincolnshire.

Glorious sunshine bathed todays competition in stark contrast to the snow storm we experienced driving home. On paper a strong Blue team featuring campionship leaders Kate and Gary accompanied by Ryan should have been unbeatable, however, David Baarda, Will Wilkinson and Georgina Harrison playing in her first match had different ideas. Blue's played quickly, however the soft sand disrupted their play allowing Yellows to pick up the pieces and score 4 goals. Blues managed 1 goal with a quick break from Kate Parks but they were never going to bridge the gap.

2 Championship points to Yellow and 1 point to Blue leaves Kate and Gary in joint first position on 16 points with 1 match to play.

The first chukka was very close with 1 goal a piece and 13 year old Olivia enjoying the thrill of her first match, however, the second chukka was murderous.

The strong Yellow Team spearheaded by Ryan Mooney with fast support from Kate and Gary proved unstoppable and the ball rarely left the Reds half. Final score 4 1/2 - 2 and the Yellows collect 2 valuable championship points.

Our next match is on March 8th at 12pm.

With the whole of England shut down through snow the hardy folk of VYPC took to the beach. Despite the cold the surface was superb allowing for fast open polo. It was good to have David Baarda back in action and he played brilliantly given the amount of time he has been away.

The first chukka was very close with Blues leading just 1 goal to a half, however, from the start of the second chukka Gary Robinson having stollen a whip from the opposition (Andy Gaddas will regret that!) stole the show. Gary closely supported by Kate Parks galloped all out to goal cutting an angle to score that was quite astonishing even the opposition were amazed.

The final score ended 4 - 1 1/2. Great fun was had by all. The next match is Sunday 22nd February 2009, 12pm kickoff.

On one of the coldest days of the season three teams braved the strong winds to battle out for championship points. The Yellow team were strengthened by Paul having a fully fit Roxy back in the team.

The first chukka saw a surprisingly easy victory to Green over Blue with both Kate and Gary lacking match practice. Yellow's then compounded Blue's misery setting them up to play Green in the final. A close match followed however Will Wilkinson's defensive backhand straight to Paul proved very costly and Andy Gaddas let Will know that he considered it to be the wrong shot!!

Yellows take 3 points, Greens 2 points and Blues 1 point.

2nd ABI Beach Match - 14th December 2008 -

Teams
VYPC Blue
Sally Donaldson
Gary Robinson
David Parker
Ryan Mooney

VYPC Green
Paul Piddington
Andy Gaddas
David Baarda

The 2nd ABI Beach Challenge saw just two teams compete with illness and injury depleting the field. Current league leaders Lisa Piddington is expecting her second child, Kate Parks has a broken hand and Will Wilkinson missed his first match in 3 years with man flu - he really must be ill!

The Green team proved too strong for Blues running out winners by 4 goals to 2 1/2. Particular mention to David Baarda who having not sat on his horse for a month played a blinder.

Green take 2 points and Blue 1 point.

Beach Polo 30th November 2008 - December 6, 2008

Teams
Blue - Paul Piddington, Will Wilkinson and Liz Spurdens
Red - Lisa Piddington, Kate Parks, Gary Robinson and Sally Donaldson
Yellow - Abi Watts, Jacqui Stride, Andy Gaddas and David Parker.

Despite the cold wind conditions were perfect for todays match. Yellows drew Reds for the first chukka and a convincing win from Reds put them straight into the final.

Blues then played Yellow and despite Abi's best eforts Blues won through to play Red in the final.

The final chukka had Reds as strong favourites however a change of tactics by Blues Captain Paul stopped Reds open game allowing Liz Spurdens on pony Ruby playing their first beach match to score her first goal. Despite a last minute attack by the Reds Blues take all the points.

The next beach match is 14th December, again at the slightly earier time of 1pm due to tide times.

Green easily beat orange in the first chukka, it was tough going for Chris who has arrived back from exerise in Kenya, so the beach must have seemed pretty chilly. The second chukka saw light blue beating dark blue to set up the final. The wooden spoon went to dark blue, who were beaten in the third chukka by the orange team. The final, was an exciting encounter between light blue and green, with Paul resorting to splashing the opposition whenever the ball neared water. However, green held their nerve to claim a great victory. This now leaves Kate and Lisa heading the beach championship at this early stage. The next match will be the 30th November, at 1pm.

The first round match saw close competition between white and blue result in a 2-1 victory to the whites. The second round saw a comfortable 3-0 victory for VYPC green, setting up a final between green and white. The weather proved decisive in this final as whites going downwind could not keep cpntrol of the ball, and greens struggled to move it towards goal, the drawn out battle resulted in a 0-0 draw which saw greens victorious on goal difference against blue. The villains of the match were Richard Jones, who missed an open goal, and David Baarda who resorted to unashamed violence towards Kate!!!

This lead to a dramatic penalty shoot out which saw a whole round of penalties still leave the teams tied. The second round, of sudden death penalties, saw NEC emerge as victorious after a dramatic miss by villain of the day Richard Jones. Many thanks to Gary Robinson for sponsoring this cup.

The biggest match of the season saw a capacity crowd fill both sides of the polo ground, and with all the players fired up a great game ensued. New sponsors JCT600 playing for the first time at VYPC showed considerable nervousness in front of goal, missing endless oppourtunities to take the lead in this match. ANC held their nerve and were never headed, the closest JCT600 got was to level at half time 3-3. ANC ran out worth winners 7-5 and special mention to Guy Robertson who played a key role in driving ANC forward. Many thanks to Ann-Marie Jackson and Bill Birmingham for promoting this worthwhile charity match.

Following a week of rain we were delighted to play the Air Ambulance Cup on grass. The first round saw a more than comfortable win by Essence, beating Pink by 5-1. The second round saw an amazing fight back by Brown to beat Pink by 6-5 1/2, with Gary Robinson and Will Wilkinson linking up well to score 3 goals in their last chukka. This set up a final between Essence and Stride that saw a well organised Essence team control the match and despite Ryan Mooney missing 3 open goals, the silverware was clinched by a last minute Richard Jones' goal. Blue therefore take 3 points, Brown 2, and the Pinks collect just 1, with just 3 matces left before the end of season.

This was the first playing of the inter-club challenge and took place at Toulston's beautiful Tadcaster grounds. The five chukka match proved every bit as exciting as the players had anticipated. However, VYPC took an early lead and never relinquished it. Good organisational skills from the young players proved too much for the local team and the eventual score of 7-3 was a fair reflection of the match. Many thanks go to Gareth Gaunt for both the invitation and his constructive captaincy and umpiring. We very much look forward to playing this fixture again next season.

A very competitive evening match saw a well balanced green pick off the favourites pink in round one. Yellows easily beat a very novice blue, with Bradley playing his first club match, setting up a final between green and yellow. Despite being favourites yellows were defeated by a well organised greens who capitalised on a couple of simple yellow errors. This allowed greens to take all 4 points, yellows 3. Pinks easily overran blues to take 2 points, leaving blues with a 1 point wooden spoon.

The club championship is closer than ever after Sundays polo in the park result, we shall reveal the placings!!

Due to heavy rain this fixture was moved from Leadenham to John Tinsley's Branston ground. Billed as a beginners match, VYPC were slightly overwhelmed to be facing 1,0 and -1 opposition. However, never daunted, VYPC proved both well organised and creative. Chris G10 scored the goal of the day with a mid-air stop and volley through the posts.

The five chukka match proved close throughout with VYPC only half a goal down with just one minute left to play, and unfortunately Hero Suzuki broke clear wilst VYPC were relentlessly pushing for a last goal and stole the match. We very much look forward to repeating this fixture next year, and our thanks go to James for providing the hospitality.

Six teams fought out an arena hunt cup due to torrential rain making the polo field unsafe. Goal difference meant all the teams had to score as many as possible in the first round which lead to a final between yellow and surprisingly, light blue (Jacqui Stride scored two amazing goals to secure the final slot). The second round results distributed the points as follows: orange- 1 point, blue- 2 points!!!, green- 3 points, red- 4 points, light blue- 5 points, yellow- 6. A good crowd enjoyed a BBQ after the match, and our thanks go to Sally and Jacqui for all their hard work.

After an initial lesson to get the teams familiar with basic rules and technique, the competition began for the 2008 hunt cup. The South comfortably beat the B & B and the Sinnington beat the Grove and Rufforth. The final between the South and Sinnington saw a close battle, however, the Beckerlegge/Green combination proved too strong and the South held on for victory. The wooden spoon went to the B & B, however, as the only Master of Foxhounds, a special mention should go to Peter Turland for being such a good sport. This cup in its third year is going from strength to strength and we look forward to even more teams competing in 2009. South Hunt Committee member Elizabeth Beckerlegge is pictured here presenting the Trophy.

VYPC yellow further dampened browns day, resulting in their one point for third place. A very close final two chukkas saw a well organised all girl pink team play good open four-man polo and a worthy victory to claim the trophy. The pink girls claim three points, yellow take two. Due to demand this match was played over 5 chukkas creating a captains overlap. This allowed pinks, captained by Milo to gain a significant lead in the first chukka when Blue's captain was umpiring. After very competitive polo the last chukka left the Blue's requiring 8 goals to win!!! Given the 7 minutes Blues needed to score more than a goal a minute to stand any chance of winning and miraculously with just 30 seconds left,Blues had a chance to win the match, unfortunately their last attack was sucessfully defended by Katie Fanthorpe to run down the clock. Pinks take the 2 points, leaving blues with 1.

Despite heavy rain, a large crowd enjoyed a sit down meal and a six chukka polo match for the York Against Cancer Charity. The ground held up brilliantly, allowing fast open polo. The first two chukkas saw a well organised VYPC beat Grainger Appleyard. The next match brought Stride Brown into the action, who, starting cold, were beaten by Grainger Appleyard. This set up a final two chukkas between Stride and VYPC with Stride needing to win by two clear goals. With good defensive play by James and Chris attempting to shut down Pauls attacks, Stride found it very difficult to score. However, with the last play of the match Paul broke free from the throw in and scored with the last hit of the game.

Stride take 3 Championship points.
VYPC-2, and Grainger Appleyard-1.

Perfect weather created an excellent playing surface for what turned out to be a fast competitive interclub match. Yellows comfortably beat green but as it turned out later, not comfortably enough as the blues positively annihilated them. This set up a final between blue and yellow that was always going to be a close fought match. Blues had to be favourite with all the players in top form and new player James showing excellent potential. Paul chose to play a youngster and with 30 seconds left on the clock was winning by 1 goal. However, a superlative run from end to end, involving the whole team saw a last second match drawing score by Kate. Paul foolishly thought a penalty shoot out left the yellows favourites, however, legal eagle Lisa noted goal difference from the earlier match gave them victory without need for penalties. A final thought goes out for cannon fodder Gemma who managed to absorb 2 beautifully driven clearances by her captain!! I fear large bruises to follow!!

Maximum 3 points go to blue, 2 points to yellow, and 1 to the wooden spooners green. We all eagerly anticipate the midseason championship table results.

Following the match draw, Richard Jones' ABI started 2 goals down which they quickly set about recovering. By half time, Pink Ladies had managed to add another 2 goals to their tally, leading 4-2. A torrential downpour saw players dive for the shelter of the oak trees, and the second half was restarted with ABI breaking back immediately. With dying seconds to go, Paul bashed a 'hail Mary' pass from the half way line, that found it's way through 7 sets of horses legs to score a match tying goal at 7-7, setting up the first penalty shoot out of the season.

Unfortunately for the Ladies, their nerve didn't hold and ABI won 3-2 on penalties to secure 2 championship points for the team.

Blues fought back in the next match to beat Reds by 1 ½ to 1 in a shock result. David and Johan again finding the pace very fast.

In the last match Red needed to beat White by 3 goals and giving ½ a goal on handicap this was going to be tough.

Alistair was again in good form well supported by his 3 team mates and a crucial goal from Will Wilkinson and only 2 goals from Red meant that despite beating Whites the Reds had not done enough to win.

Many congratulations to ABI Whites.

Following the BBC\'s coverage of the ABI Beach Challenge we had the Daily Telegraph reporting on our beach match today. The weather was amazing with incredible sunshine and a perfect flat surface. ABI Blue who have won the last 2 matches quickly overwhelmed ABI White by 3 goals with Mark working closely with Lisa.

This led to Red entering the arena for the first time this season with Paul Piddington captaining 3 beginners. Their first chukka saw them narrowly defeat Whites setting up a final between them and the defending champions. In what can only be described as a very fast match the ex racehorses amongst the finalists showed their speed and again VYPC Red sneaked a close victory to put their name on the shield.

This is the third year running that we have played the Patrick Wilkinson Beach Challenge and being Christmas we decided to make it Fancy Dress. The first round saw the Santa\'s overwhelm the Zorros with a hat trick from Lisa Piddington. In the other opening round the Kings drew 2-2 with the Snowmen requiring a penalty shoot out. The resulting penalties saw the Snowmen hammer all 3 through the posts knocking the Kings out of the contest.

The wooden spoon was therefore between Zorros and the Kings which was won convincingly 3-0 by the Kings. A fitting seasonal final saw a clash between the Santas and the Snowmen which was a battle of the youth. The Snowmen where all students and the Santas had the youngest member of the club. The final saw the Santas win 2-0 with better and more controlled team play.

Rachel Cooper played on the beach for the first time with her new pony Piggy and looks very promising. Everybody is looking forward to the fancy dress on 30th December.

Durham University Vs Nottingham University - 13/12/2007 @ 11:28
November 24th 2007

One of the strongest university Polo Clubs in the Country boasting 6 different teams came up to Vale of York Polo Club to challenge Durham University. The teams where: Nottingham – Sophie Ballard, Rosie Trousdell and Felix Ritchy, Durham – Jamie Pike, Emma Chapman and Tamara Huddleston.

A very well organised Nottingham team took an early lead against a Durham side with much less experience as a team. Jamie Pike who captained Durham worked very hard throughout the match and scored a consolation goal at the end but Nottingham proved too strong and finished 3 goals to 1.

We are at present trying to organise other university teams to continue the university challenge.

ABI\'s Finance Director Richard Jones played for ABI Blue enjoyed the first victory in the series winning 5 – 3. Following a fantastic summer season the beach polo kicked off on Sunday 28th October with our first winter match. Two teams from the Vale of York Polo Club battled it out on a glorious sunny afternoon. The beach conditions were perfectly flat with very little wind allowing for exciting flowing polo. VYPC Blue sneaked the winning goal with an excellent backhand from first timer Johan Ohlsson in the dying seconds.

Yorvale Corporate Polo Day - 13/09/2007

Accountants, Solicitors, Property Developers and Estate Agents gathered at Houghton Hall for a Corporate Polo Experience. 16 eager to learn volunteers enjoyed both the beautiful surroundings and amazing weather to try their skills at polo.

4 teams had several challenges to compete against their fellow professionals all counting towards the eventual winner of this polo day.

Lunch was enjoyed in the Hall with Lord Manton\'s Butler Derek providing for everybody\'s requirements. To avoid drunken excesses his Lordships wine cellar was kept under lock and key.

The whole day culminated in a two chukka match between the 4 teams with Chris Digby\'s Blues coming out the eventual winners.

The day was rounded up with drinks and prize presentation at the local Red Lion in Holme on Spalding Moor followed by the guests enjoying evening chukkas with the members of the club.

Many of those taking part had never sat on a horse previously so as I state my company moto is “anyone can play polo”.

Universities Championships - 24/08/2007

University Championships

Many congratulations to Durham University for winning the University Polo Championships. Along with players from Leeds, York, London Vet School and Warwickshire Universities, Durham have been regularly coached by Paul Piddington at the Vale of York Polo Club and it is tremendous to see one of my teams win through.

Special mention to Jamie Pike of Durham for all his work in organising the Universities Lessons.

Pony Club Championships - 24/08/2007

Pony Club Championships

Many congratulations to the Beadale Pony Club from North Yorkshire for coming second in the National Pony Club Championships at Cowdray.

Paul Piddington has been coaching these children for the last 2 years and to beat the Beaufort in the semi-final must have opened everyones eyes to the strength and commitment of polo in the North. Special mention to 14 year old Abi Watts who has been playing her first season this year with the adults at VYPC who successfully hit a 60 yard penalty to win the match and this is in a team with 3 boys. WELL DONE ABI.

The new sponsors Essence of Healthcare provided a beautiful trophy to be played yearly for the Conservative Party Funds. A large crowd witnessed a very closely fought match with Essence winning 6 – 51/2 scoring the winning goal in the dying seconds of the last chukka. It was a excellent occasion with Dee and David of Essence Healthcare looking after their guests in glorious weather.

It was also the maiden match for brother and sister Matt and Rachel Cooper drawn in separate teams giving first blood to Rachel. I\'m sure there will be many more opportunities for them to clash mallets again. Special mention to Derek who helped to organise such a lovely day and many thanks to Lord and Lady Manton for opening up the Hall for tea and cakes afterwards.

The worst flooding since records began has hit Yorkshire!! Our grounds are under water and our new sponsors ABI with member Richard Jones where disappointed at the weather conditions.

Paul Piddington devised a forty ball penalty challenge on the Wooden Horse as a replacement match. With 10 shots at goal per round using both forehand and backhand options the teams competed at the 30 yard penalty spot. Consistent ball hitting from the Stride Team meant a gradual increase in goals put more pressure on ABI. The final score: Stride 95 goals beating ABI with 75 goals creating what must be the biggest ever match winning score.

Patington Cup - 17/07/2007

Teams
VYPC Yellow
Paul Piddington
Ryan Mooney / Nicola Thompson
Katie Fanthorpe / Sally Donaldson

Stride Brown
Milo Watson
Lisa Piddington / Jacqui Stride
Abi Watts / Will Wilkinson

Rain fell all day proving challenging for both the ground and the players. Stride Brown took advantage of their half goal handicap start scoring first putting immediate pressure on VYPC Yellow. Despite several scoring chances VYPC\'s attack failed to produce the goods. Most notably the miss of the season coming from Ryan Mooney who managed to shank a ball wide that was sat 1 metre away from the centre of the goal mouth. This pretty much summed up Yellow\'s afternoon and further goals from Brown\'s man of the match Jacqui Stride sealed a very wet victory.

The second playing of the Katie Roberts-Stride Cup enjoyed fabulous weather with the grounds playing exceptionally fast. Team selection for this match created a girls versus boys challenge, which was always going to prove difficult for the Brown team. Giving half a goal to the Pinks proved costly as they scored first to put immediate pressure on the Brown Team. Despite heroic efforts by the Browns who where camped in the Pinks half for the majority of the match the ball simply refused to cross the goal line.

Mark Siddle played a pivotal role in securing an excellent victory for the Pinks and looks terrific value off his -2 handicap. It must be said that the two chukkas he played on Lightning did a lot of damage to the Brown effort. Many thanks to Katie Roberts-Stride and we look forward to playing the Cup next year.

This was our first tournament at be held in the beautiful Newby Hall grounds and we very much look forward to playing here again.

Despite Paul looking like the only gay in the village wearing a two sizes too small pink shirt he continued to play as best he could however the opposition proved too much and overcame what should have been a much stronger team.

Treading in a half time added a whole new dimension to polo when you consider that we followed the dancing JCB demonstration. The driver would have ended up in the tower had this happened at Windsor.

The weather was excellent bringing in good crowds to watch what was their first polo match in many cases. Queues of people followed each match having a go on the wooden horse. They certainly experienced how difficult hitting the ball can be.

Grey Hound Trophy - 12/06/2007

Teams:
VYPC Yellow
Paul Piddington
Lisa Piddington / Abi Watts
Richard Jones / Will Wilkinson

Stride Electrical
Milo Watson / Mark Siddle
Katie Fanthorpe / Jacqui Stride
Toby Wilkinson / Sally Donaldson

Despite horrendous rain we were the only polo club to be playing on the grass in Yorkshire this weekend, which shows just how superb these grounds are at Houghton Hall particularly when you consider that after 4 chukkas there was no sign of any damage done.

The match provided new sponsors, The Grey Hound Trust with the opportunity of starting an annual fixture to promote their activities, but unfortunately on this occasion the weather drove away what could have been a good crowd of spectators.

RAF Vs VYPC - 12/06/2007

VYPC Vs RAF

After an amazingly dry April which left most polo grounds rock hard we were pleasantly surprised to arrive at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire to play on a fantastic surface. This must be the most underused polo ground in Britain.

Teams

VYPC
Paul Piddington 1
Mark Siddle / Sab Gogna -2
Will Wilkinson / Katie Fanthorpe -2
Lisa Piddington / Sally Donaldon -2

RAF
Joe North 1
Ft Lt Dave Black -1
Gemma Turner Wright -2
Ally Lee -2

Umpire: Martin Reason

This was always going to be a close battle and receiving half a goal on handicap was to prove critical. We exchanged goals throughout the match leading to a nail biting final chukka with the RAF leading by 4 goals to 3 ½. End to end play produced no goals until 16 seconds from the end Paul Piddington slipped a pass through to Mark Siddle just outside the RAF\'s 60 and with a cool head he ran the ball in to win in emphatic style.

After several years of competition this was the first victory against the RAF and the celebrations went on into the night at a sumptuous dress dinner in College Halls.

In this round robin american Brown beat VYPC by 3 1/2 goals to 1 with excellent 4 man polo. Pink beat VYPC by 1 goal setting up the final between brown and pink. Excellent defending by Brown maintained their 1/2 goal advantage to run out the surprise winners of this first challenge. They each receive 3 points, pinks 2 points and VYPC 1 point.

The next Stride Electrical Challenge takes place on 30th May 2007.

In glorious sunshine and with masses of kites to add to the drama we competed for this annual plate. First off Red played Blue and despite a valiant attempt by Mark Siddle to play the new horse Clive the kites proved to much and Blue\\\'s ran out 3 – 0 victors.

Second game saw Yellow play Red which proved a much tighter contest and ended with a penalty shoot out narrowly won by yellow after extra time.

The final between Yellow and Blue witnessed a fast end to end match however Alistair failed to find the posts allowing Yellow to win 3 – 1.

Apres chukka food and drinks where kindly provided by Jacqui Stride to round off another excellent season.

VYPC Vs Ranksborough @ Ranksborough - 11/05/2007

VYPC Vs Ranksborough @ Ranksborough (18th March 2007)
Result VYPC 13, Ranksborough 12.

In weather conditions that changed from bright sunshine, gale force winds, pitch black cloud and driving snow we played a fast competitive four chukka match.

VYPC scoring first broke into a good lead which they never conceded throughout this brilliant match. Ranksborough had a desperate second chukka conceding four goals against the driving snow.

The change of ends at half time witnessed a Ranksborough fight back to end the 3rd chukka one goal down.

Special mention should go to Mark Siddle playing in his first competitive arena match, played an excellent defensive role as well as scoring a couple of crucial goals.

Saving his best pony till last Paul Piddington riding Victoria kept a rampant Ranksborough at bay scoring 3 goals a piece to seal the victory. A total of 25 goals scored in 4 chukkas shows just how good this arena is.

Fancy Dress Polo on Bridlington Beach - 23/01/2007

This Christmas Eve saw Fancy Dress Polo on Bridlington Beach for the Vale of York Polo Club. It was very unseasonal weather to see Santas, Elves, Fairies and Napoleons cantering round in the bright sunshine. The tournament was kindly sponsored by Guy Gosselin Spine Centre who provided a very festive trophy.

Four teams entered for what looked like a tough challenge. First up Guy Gosselins Napoleons played Matt Yeos Fairies. The Fairies fluttered around and came out the winners. Next, Paul Piddingtons Santas played Jacqui Strides Elves. The Santas gave the Elves a good run around and went into the final after some good goals where scored by the two Mrs Santas, Lisa Piddington and Abi Watts.

The Final saw the Santas clash with the Fairies and after a tough battle the Santas took 1st place. The wooden spoon was collected by the Napoleons as the Elves beat them 3 -0.

The polo was finished off by a fantastic festive feast and mulled wine kindly provided by Jacqui Stride.

If anyone is interested in joining us for some beach polo please phone Paul Piddington on 07788 426968. Ponies are available to hire.
